Snippets in Korean, Japanese, Arabic and other non-Latin scripts
Text expanders can break when you type with an input method. Here is what to test and how to build snippets that work in any language.

If you write in Korean, Japanese or Chinese, or in a right-to-left script such as Arabic or Hebrew, you may have tried a text expander and been disappointed. Characters came out in the wrong order, a half-formed syllable stayed on the screen, or the replacement worked only in some programs. These problems are real, and they have understandable causes. This guide explains them and how to avoid trouble.
Why these scripts are harder
When you type English, each key produces a letter immediately. In Korean, Japanese and Chinese you use an input method editor. You type sounds, and the editor assembles them into characters. In Korean, for example, the consonants and vowels you press are combined into a single syllable block, and the last syllable stays in an unfinished state until you press the next key. A program that replaces text while that composition is in progress can corrupt it.
Right-to-left scripts add a different challenge: the visual order and the typing order differ, and mixed text such as Arabic with an English product name needs careful handling of direction.
What Pine Shortcut does
Pine Shortcut fully supports Korean Hangul composition, and snippet text can be in any language you can type. The program is made in Korea by people who use Hangul every day, so composition has been tested as a core case rather than an afterthought. You can save a Korean reply, a Japanese greeting or an Arabic address as a snippet and insert it in the same way as English.

Habits that avoid problems
- Keep your triggers in plain Latin letters and numbers, even when the snippet text is in another script. A trigger like /thx behaves the same whichever input mode is active.
- Put the prefix first. The prefix is typed in the same way in every input mode, which makes accidental expansion unlikely.
- After typing the trigger, press Space. If you are mid-composition, finish the syllable first.
- If a snippet will be used in several languages, give them related triggers, such as /thx, /ko-thx and /jp-thx, so you remember the pattern.
A test you should run
Whatever tool you use, do this test before you trust it. Save a snippet containing a sentence in your language, a mixed sentence with a number and an English word, and a snippet that ends with punctuation. Insert each one in a browser text box, a document editor and a chat window. Check the characters, the order, the spacing and whether any unfinished character remains at the end.

Look at the line carefully. The numerals and the English words should sit in the correct place, and no extra spaces or stray syllables should appear before or after the text.
Writing multilingual replies
Many businesses answer customers in two languages. A practical method is to save each language as a separate snippet instead of one long mixed one. Then you can insert one, or both in sequence. Name them in a consistent way and keep them in a folder per language so the picker search stays tidy.
Be careful with machine translation. If you do not read a language well, ask a native speaker to check each snippet once. A mistake in a snippet is repeated every time you use it. The advantage is the same: once a native speaker has approved a sentence, every future use is correct.
File names, product names and numbers deserve a small extra check. A Korean sentence that contains an English brand name and a price may look right on screen but use different quote marks or spacing than your style guide requires. Because a snippet is reused, fixing it once fixes it everywhere. Take five minutes after saving a new multilingual snippet to read it aloud and compare it with a trusted example from your own past writing.
If something goes wrong
When text appears garbled, first undo with Ctrl+Z and see whether the original trigger returns. Then check that the snippet text itself is correct, by opening it on your account page. If the saved text is fine and the insertion is wrong in one specific program, note the program and Windows versions and email contact@pineshortcut.com. Reports for particular scripts are especially valuable, because they help improve support for the people who need it.
