A text expander is a convenient place to keep things you type often. That convenience is exactly why it is the wrong place for some information. Passwords, card numbers, identification numbers and other people's personal data should not be stored in snippets, in Pine Shortcut or in any similar tool. This article explains why and what to do instead.

Snippets are plain text you can read. If you can paste a password with a trigger, anyone who sits at your unlocked PC can do the same. Your snippet library is also synchronized between your linked PCs, so a secret would exist in more than one place, and it would appear in any CSV or JSON export you make. A secret kept in plain text, in several places, is hard to protect and easy to forget.

What Pine Shortcut does and does not do

In Pine Shortcut, the keystrokes you type are never sent to the server, because trigger detection runs on your PC. What is stored and synchronized is the snippet library itself. That is the reason for the advice above: keep the library free of anything that you would not want to see in an export file.
