Windows keyboard shortcuts worth knowing

A short list of Windows shortcuts for editing, windows, screenshots and security that save time every day.

You can use Windows with the mouse alone, but a few dozen keystrokes, learned once, save a small amount of time hundreds of times. This is not a complete list. These are the shortcuts that are common, stable across recent Windows versions and actually used in office work. They also combine well with a text expander like Pine Shortcut.

Ctrl+Z is the one that gives people the courage to work faster. If a snippet expands somewhere you did not intend, Ctrl+Z is the first thing to try in most programs.

Clipboard history and screenshots

Win+V opens the Windows clipboard history, if it is switched on in settings. It shows recent copied items so you can paste an earlier one. That is useful for short-lived content such as a number you copied five minutes ago. Be aware that clipboard history keeps what you copied, so avoid copying passwords.

Win+Shift+S starts the Windows screenshot tool, where you select an area to capture. It is the quickest way to show a colleague or customer what you are seeing.

How they fit together with snippets

Pine Shortcut adds its own shortcuts to this list: your per-snippet global hotkeys such as Ctrl+Alt+1, and Ctrl+Shift+Space for the picker window. Before you assign a hotkey, check that it does not clash with a shortcut you already use. Mixing the two kinds is efficient: for example, Win+Shift+S for a screenshot, then a snippet for the sentence you add when sending it.

Příklad
/shot
Hello [Name],

I attached a screenshot of what I see on my screen. Could you please take a look and tell me what you think the cause is?

Kind regards,
[Your name]
Příklad
/away
I have locked my PC and am away until [Time]. For urgent matters, please call 000-0000-0000.

Practical tip: learn one new shortcut per week instead of ten at once. Put a note on your monitor, use it until your hand does it without thinking, then replace the note.
