Get started in five minutes: your first snippet

Create one snippet, type its trigger, and see how a few keystrokes turn into a full message at your cursor.

Pine Shortcut is a Windows text-snippet app. You type a short trigger, confirm it, and the trigger is replaced by a longer piece of text at your cursor, in whatever program you are typing in. This guide walks through the first five minutes so that you finish with one snippet that already saves you work.

Step 1: pick something you type every day

The best first snippet is not the cleverest one, it is the one you retype most often. Open your sent mail or chat history and look for a sentence you have written at least five times this week. Typical candidates are a greeting with your name and role, a shipping or opening-hours answer, an email signature, or a standard "thank you for contacting us" reply.

A quick way to judge the value: if the text takes 20 seconds to type and you send it 15 times a week, that is about five minutes a week for one snippet. That is modest on its own, but ten such snippets give you close to an hour a week, and the real gain is that the wording is always correct.

Step 2: create the snippet on the website

Log in on the Pine Shortcut website. That is where you manage your snippets and folders. Create a new snippet, give it a trigger and paste the text. Keep the trigger short and start it with a slash so it never looks like a normal word, for example /sig for a signature or /ship for a shipping answer.

د مثال
/thanks
Hello [Name],

Thank you for getting in touch. I have received your message and will reply within one business day.

Kind regards,
[Your name]

Use square-bracket placeholders such as [Name] for the parts you change each time. After expanding the snippet you jump back, replace the placeholder, and send. It is faster and safer than rewriting the sentence from scratch.

Step 3: use it

Click into any text field, an email, a chat window, a form or a document, type the trigger and confirm it. The trigger is replaced by your full text at the cursor. Trigger detection runs on your own PC, and the keystrokes you type are never sent to the server.

If you do not remember a trigger, press Ctrl+Shift+Space (or click the tray icon) to open the small picker window, search for a word from the snippet, and press Enter. The picker is covered in its own article.

Step 4: add two more, then stop

Resist the urge to build fifty snippets on day one. Add two more that you will actually use tomorrow, for example a closing line and an address or opening-hours answer, and work with them for a few days. Snippets you never use only clutter the list.

د مثال
/hours
Our opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00. We are closed on weekends and public holidays.
د مثال
/addr
[Street and number], [Postal code] [City]
Please use the main entrance and ring the bell for [Company].

What you get with each plan

The Free plan has no ads, up to 5 snippets and one PC. Pro is $9.99 per year and adds unlimited snippets, account sync and multiple devices. If you buy seats for several PCs, the Multi plan lowers the price per PC. With Pro, snippets sync automatically between linked PCs, so you only write them once.

Practical tip: after your first week, look at which of your snippets you actually used and delete the rest. A short, trusted list beats a long one you have to search.
